The nonprofit organization Ichthus Flint typically facilitates entertainment and networking opportunities for young professionals, but when an opportunity arose to serve Flint in a more community service-oriented fashion, Ichthus began scheduling a community clean-up in tandem with the Flint River Watershed Coalition’s Flint River clean-up. April 27 marked the third year of this beautification partnership.

In past years, Ichthus has supplied a dozen volunteers to help clean Downtown, but an unexpected phone call from the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program (ROTC) of Flint Northwestern High School put over 50 volunteers on hand for this year’s event. The students and several other volunteers picked up trash and washed windows on several Downtown blocks.

A spokesperson from Ichthus mentioned that the organization was delighted to receive help from the ROTC. “The students have been a tremendous help this year,” he said. “We look forward to working with ROTC and Northwestern again in the future.”

The team of volunteers enjoyed a cookout in front of the Capitol Theatre building after the work was done. The cookout was also a joint effort of the Watershed Coalition and Ichthus Flint. Ichthus is known to provide several similar events throughout the year. All who are willing to serve are welcome.
